About PTE Core
PTE Core is a computer test of general English for everyday life and work. It is taken at a test centre and lasts about two hours. Many tasks are integrated: one answer can count towards more than one skill.
There are three timed parts: Speaking and Writing (50 to 65 minutes), Reading (27 to 37 minutes), then Listening (22 to 37 minutes). Pearson says no one receives the shortest or the longest time in every part, and no test runs longer than two hours. A test has between 52 and 67 tasks, drawn from 19 task types. An unscored personal introduction comes first.
The January 2026 Score Guide gives a range for each task type rather than one fixed number. Speaking and Writing has Read Aloud (6–7), Repeat Sentence (10–12), Describe Image (3–4), Respond to a Situation (2–4), Answer Short Question (5–6), Summarize Written Text (1–2) and Write Email (2–3). Reading has Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks (5–6), Multiple Choice Multiple Answers (1–2), Reorder Paragraph (2–3), Fill in the Blanks (4–5) and Multiple Choice Single Answer (1–2). Listening has Summarize Spoken Text (1–2), Multiple Choice Multiple Answers (1–2), Fill in the Blanks (2–3), Multiple Choice Single Answer (1–2), Select Missing Word (1–2), Highlight Incorrect Words (1–2) and Write from Dictation (3–4).
Scores are from 10 to 90: an overall score and a score for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. The overall score is not the average of the four skills, because some tasks count towards two skills and Pearson does not publish a formula. There is no pass mark on the test itself. Pearson's teacher guide says results are typically ready in two days and that scores are valid for two years. The January 2026 Score Guide also prints an alignment from these scores to Canadian Language Benchmarks 3 to 10, and says that table can be updated.
On this site, spoken answers and the longer written answers are self-assessed. Pearson scores the live test with automated systems trained on human ratings.
