About TOEFL iBT

TOEFL iBT measures the English used in university study. It is taken on a computer, at a test centre or at home, and tests Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.

The test changed on 21 January 2026. Reading and Listening are now adaptive: the questions you are given later depend on how you answered earlier ones. Writing and Speaking have new, shorter tasks. Because the test adapts, the number of questions and the time can vary a little.

Each section is scored from 1 to 6 in half bands, a scale aligned with the Common European Framework (CEFR), and the overall score is their average. For a two-year transition, score reports also give a comparable overall score on the old 0 to 120 scale.

There is no pass mark. Each university or organisation sets the score it needs, and many are still publishing requirements on the 0 to 120 scale.
