About PTE Academic

PTE Academic tests speaking, writing, reading and listening in one sitting of about two hours, at a test centre or, in some countries, at home. Many tasks are integrated: one answer can count towards more than one skill.

The test is in three parts: Speaking and Writing, then Reading, then Listening. Each question type has its own time limit or answer window.

From 7 August 2025 two speaking tasks were added, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. Pearson says the other 20 question types are unchanged and that human review now joins automated scoring for some question types.

Results are on a scale of 10 to 90: an overall score and a score for each of the four skills. There is no pass mark; each university or government sets its own.
