About IELTS

IELTS tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting; Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, on the same day or up to a week before or after.

There are two forms. IELTS Academic is for university study and professional registration. IELTS General Training is for work, training below degree level, and migration to countries such as Canada and Australia. Listening and Speaking are the same in both; Reading and Writing differ.

Each skill gets a band from 0 to 9 in half bands, and the overall band is their average. There is no pass or fail: each university, employer or government sets the band it needs.

The test can be taken on paper or on a computer at a test centre. The questions and timing are the same.
