About Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test is taken on a computer at home, through Duolingo's desktop app, with a phone used as a second camera. You need about one hour: roughly 5 minutes to set up and show your ID, about 45 minutes of questions, and about 10 minutes for a writing sample and a speaking sample. Results are ready in two days, or in 12 hours if you pay for faster results. A certified result is valid for two years.

The test is not split into Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking papers. Question types are mixed. Many of them adapt: the difficulty changes with your answers, and the test can give more or fewer questions until the scoring is confident. This site's practice form is fixed. It does not adapt. Every candidate gets the same questions, using one count inside each published range.

The score is from 10 to 160, in steps of 5, for an overall score and for Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The overall score is the average of those four, rounded to the nearest 5. Four combined scores are also reported: Literacy (reading and writing), Comprehension (reading and listening), Conversation (speaking and listening) and Production (speaking and writing). Each combined score is the average of the two skills. There is no pass mark. Each university sets its own requirement.

Closed answers, such as real-word decisions, unfinished words, dictation and many reading and listening choices, are marked right or wrong, or with partial credit, by fixed rules. Speaking and writing are marked on content, organisation, vocabulary and grammar, and speaking is also marked on fluency and pronunciation. On the test that marking is done by automated models trained on human ratings. On this site you mark speaking and writing yourself.
